Lower eyelid surgery and “Festoons”

Festoons

As we get older, the skin around our eyes loses its elasticity and often becomes more saggy. Excess skin, both above and below the eyes, gives a puffy and slightly tired appearance. What really makes you tired, of course, are comments about how tired you look…

En upper eyelid surgery usually gives a very good result, you also correct the fat bag and the skin under the eyes with a so-called lower eyelid surgery the effect will be even better. Those around you will notice that you look fresh and rested, but they will rarely be able to see that you have had surgery.

A special case of sagging skin under the eyes is called festoons. We don't really have a good Swedish word for festoons. In this condition, the skin, together with the circular muscle of the eye, hangs under the eyes in one or more bags that almost resemble curtains. This appearance is particularly annoying to walk around with and can be corrected with various techniques that differ slightly from a regular lower eyelid surgery. Most often, both the skin and the circular eye muscle Orbicularis need to be tightened. It is more difficult, but not impossible, to get as good a result as with a regular lower eyelid surgery. The results usually provide a great improvement for those affected by these "curtains" under the eyes.
