Mommy Makeover

Mommy makeover is a combination procedure where the results are often fantastic.

After pregnancy comes a hectic but wonderful time for most people, what has grown inside you has become a new little life. So wonderful!

There probably aren't many mothers who regret their pregnancies, children are the best thing we have. When the initial joy and the tumultuous life with small children has begun to subside, however, many of us realize how our bodies have been affected. We can be happy about some changes and it's good to see that we've had children. It's not something we regret!

But sometimes we don't recognize ourselves in our bodies, because for some the changes are quite dramatic. The stomach can still look pregnant several years after the last child. The abdominal muscles are often divided or stretched so the stomach is weak and sags if you don't actively hold it in. In the end, it's so common to walk around holding your stomach in that it's hard to relax.

Stretch marks can of course be a nice reminder of the big belly, but they're not fun if there's too much of them. There's often a limit to how much the skin can contract, and a year or so after pregnancy, not much more happens, no matter how healthy you live and how often you exercise.

A very common procedure to regain some of your previous figure and core strength is abdominoplasty. When this is done in combination with a breast surgery we usually borrow the English expression "mommy makeover"A variant for men is also called “Daddy Do-Over", Any tips on a good Swedish word are welcome! 🙂

Regardless of whether we choose to breastfeed or not, the breasts will be affected by pregnancy. For some, the breasts grow a lot and for others a little less. Many feel feminine and beautiful with the breasts that come during this period. A common desire when it comes to breast augmentation is to want to have the size you had when you left the maternity ward!

When the breastfeeding period is over and the pregnancy pounds are gone, the breasts are often gone too! Or at least they have changed shape and can be either empty or long.

It is not surprising that a common combination is abdominal and thoracic surgery. It can be breast lift, breast reduction, breast augmentation or combination. Because we almost always liposuction of the “love handles” In connection with abdominoplasty, it is advantageous to reuse that fat and inject it into the breasts to make them a little fuller.

An increasingly popular combination of procedures is Daddy Do-Over for men.

operations

During a tummy tuck, we make an incision low on the stomach, below the panty line. How long the scar will be depends on how much excess skin you have. In order to get to the abdominal muscles, we cut out the navel and loosen the skin and subcutaneous fat. By sewing the abdominal muscles together, you get a more stable torso, and the waist is also emphasized. Then the skin is stretched downwards and we can usually cut away skin and fat from the navel down to the scar. In connection with a tummy tuck, we almost always do a liposuction of the “love handles”.

The breast surgery that is included in mommy makeover may vary from patient to patient. A breast augmentation with implants or breast augmentation with fat takes a little less time than a breast lift and reduction, so the surgery time for a “mommy makeover” varies from 3 to 4 hours.  The surgery is always done under anesthesia and includes an overnight stay. There will be scars under the panty line and around the navel, as well as either under the breasts or a so-called anchor incision scar if we do a lift or reduction. Breast augmentation with your own fat gives very small scars and if we use soft, slightly smaller implants, the scars will also be very small, or they are placed in the armpit. In some cases, we can insert the implants via the abdominal incision, without any extra scars!

Mommy makeover is a very popular operation. Getting back core strength plays a big role in well-being, not getting as tired in the lower back in the afternoon significantly increases the quality of life for many. With a flatter and stronger stomach and firmer skin, it is also easier to exercise and continue to stay in shape. The combination of abdominoplasty and breast surgery completely changes the life of many of our patients, we often hear how much more comfortable they feel in various social and intimate situations. It is important for self-esteem and feeling confident in your body means a lot to many.

Follow-up

Immediately after the operation you will be given a girdle and a bra. You will wear these 24/7 for a few weeks and then for a further few weeks during the day. After about a week and two weeks you will come back to the clinic to check that everything is healing properly. Then you will meet our nurse who is an expert in aftercare and compression garments and you will be given tips on how to best care for your scars.

Of course, you are welcome to book more visits if you feel it is necessary.

Aftercare and convalescence

En mommy makeover is a relatively major procedure and expect it to take some time to fully recover. During the first week, it is good if you walk slightly bent forward and do not use all the movements. Usually you need a sick note for 3–4 weeks. It depends a bit on what kind of work you have and what shape you are in before the procedure.

Despite compression garments (girdle and bra), there will be some swelling in the surgical area, the amount varies from person to person. It can persist for months, but it decreases as time goes on. Scar formation and scar maturation are also very individual. It often takes a year, sometimes longer, for the scars to fade. Likewise, the sensation on the stomach and breasts is often a little numb at first. Expect it to take at least a year for the sensation to recover.

If you have the opportunity to have a connective tissue massage after the procedure, it is an advantage and usually speeds up recovery. We offer this at the clinic as well as various types of scar treatment, e.g. laser.

Risks and complications

As with all surgery, there is a certain risk of bleeding and infection afterwards. mommy makeover We also give blood thinners to reduce the risk of blood clots. In the event of major post-bleeding, we may need to operate again to stop the bleeding. Both bleeding and blood clots can be serious, but are thankfully rare. Healing problems and infection can occur, but this is rarely serious. Smokers and those who are seriously overweight may, however, suffer from more serious problems with healing. Therefore, it is an absolute requirement to stop smoking before and after the operation. For this reason, we also do not carry out mommy makeover if you have a BMI over 30.
