Malignant melanoma is the most serious form of skin cancer and is among the most common cancers in Sweden. The number of cases has doubled during the 2000st century.

Malignant melanoma occurs at all ages but is extremely rare in children, uncommon in adolescents, and then increases with age.

Malignant melanoma is somewhat more common on the trunk in men and on the lower legs in women, but can occur anywhere on the body.
