Breast augmentation with lift

Many times the volume of the breasts is less than what the woman wants and therefore seeks breast augmentation. Sometimes not only has the volume of the breasts disappeared after breastfeeding or age, but the breasts have also begun to sag. If we only insert a breast implant, we can achieve a small lift of the nipple position, and especially if an anatomical/teardrop-shaped implant is chosen. However, if the breast sags too much, the result would be a larger, sagging breast. Most women who seek this do not have this as an expectation after the operation. Sometimes the breast has a sagging that is on the borderline and then it may be better to first do the breast augmentation and then wait 6-12 months and if a lift is then needed, we do one during a second operation. Usually both the enlargement and the lift are done at the same time of surgery because then only one operation is needed.

Risks and complications

The risks of having a breast augmentation with a simultaneous lift are greater than the two separate procedures separately. However, the risks are so small that in most cases there are no problems, but minor corrections may be necessary after 12 months, when everything has healed properly.

Common complications

  • A small wound under the breast that takes a little extra time to heal
  • Superficial infection treated with antibiotics
  • The shape of the chest is not as good as hoped, which will have to be corrected later.

Unusual complications

  • Bleeding that requires surgery
  • Infection in the prosthetic cavity that leads to the temporary need to remove the implant
  • The wart area receives too little blood supply and a wound forms with a subsequent scar.

This is how the operation works

In the morning you will meet with your plastic surgeon and you will go over which prosthesis you have previously agreed on, how the surgery will be performed and if there are any other questions that need to be answered. The surgery is performed under general anesthesia and takes about 2.5-3 hours depending on the conditions, size of the implant and how sagging the breast is. We will give preventive antibiotics to prevent later infections from occurring. After the surgery you will wake up in our safe ward and be served some drinks/coffee and a sandwich. You will stay for 2-3 hours until we decide that you can go home. You will be given painkillers and prescriptions to take home. During the first few days you will need slightly stronger painkillers and after about a week ordinary panadil/alvedon tablets are usually enough.

Follow-up

One week after your surgery you will return for a first visit to the clinic for a check-up. After another week you will come for another visit to our nurse who will remove some stitches and check that it is healing properly. After about 6-12 months you will return for a final check-up where your plastic surgeon will check how the result has been and if any corrections are needed.

Convalescence

The wounds usually heal in about 2 weeks, but during the first 4-6 weeks you should avoid heavy lifting, strenuous physical activity and exercise to prevent the wounds from cracking.
